Claude Code <2.1.179: Unverified git checkout allows malicious plugin install
CVE-2026-86063 Published on October 13, 2026
Claude Code: Plugin Hash Pin Bypass Allows Bypass of Hash Pinning
Claude Code is an agentic coding tool. Prior to 2.1.179, the Claude Code and Claude Desktop plugin installation flow runs git checkout for a marketplace-pinned commit without verifying that the resulting HEAD equals the pinned 40-character SHA. An attacker who controls a plugin repository on a Git host that permits SHA-shaped branch names can create a branch named after the reviewed commit, causing checkout to select the branch tip and install attacker-controlled plugin code. Exploitation requires a user to install the malicious plugin and pin it to the ostensibly safe hash. This issue is fixed in version 2.1.179.
Vulnerability Analysis
CVE-2026-86063 can be exploited with network access. This vulnerability is considered to have a low attack complexity. The potential impact of an exploit of this vulnerability is considered to have no impact on confidentiality and integrity and availability.
Weakness Types
Download of Code Without Integrity Check
The product downloads source code or an executable from a remote location and executes the code without sufficiently verifying the origin and integrity of the code. An attacker can execute malicious code by compromising the host server, performing DNS spoofing, or modifying the code in transit.
Inclusion of Functionality from Untrusted Control Sphere
The software imports, requires, or includes executable functionality (such as a library) from a source that is outside of the intended control sphere.
