NGINX Gateway Fabric Config Generator Injection via Unescaped CRD Fields
CVE-2026-11311 Published on June 17, 2026
NGINX Gateway Fabric vulnerability
When NGINX Plus is configured as the data plane for NGINX Gateway Fabric, an injection vulnerability exists in the NGINX configuration generator component of NGINX Gateway Fabric. User-supplied string values from the NginxProxy Custom Resource Definition serverTokens field and the AuthenticationFilter Custom Resource Definition extraAuthArgs field are rendered directly into NGINX configuration templates without sanitization or escaping. An authenticated attacker with permission to create or modify these Custom Resource Definitions may craft values that inject arbitrary NGINX configuration directives. This is a control plane issue; there is no data plane exposure from the vulnerability trigger itself.
Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.
Vulnerability Analysis
CVE-2026-11311 can be exploited with network access, and requires small amount of user privileges. This vulnerability is considered to have a low attack complexity. The potential impact of an exploit of this vulnerability is considered to have a high impact on confidentiality and integrity, and no impact on availability.
Weakness Type
Improper Neutralization of Equivalent Special Elements
The software properly neutralizes certain special elements, but it improperly neutralizes equivalent special elements. The software may have a fixed list of special characters it believes is complete. However, there may be alternate encodings, or representations that also have the same meaning. For example, the software may filter out a leading slash (/) to prevent absolute path names, but does not account for a tilde (~) followed by a user name, which on some *nix systems could be expanded to an absolute pathname. Alternately, the software might filter a dangerous "-e" command-line switch when calling an external program, but it might not account for "--exec" or other switches that have the same semantics.
