CVE-2016-5198 vulnerability in Red Hat Products
Published on January 19, 2017
V8 in Google Chrome prior to 54.0.2840.90 for Linux, and 54.0.2840.85 for Android, and 54.0.2840.87 for Windows and Mac included incorrect optimisation assumptions, which allowed a remote attacker to perform arbitrary read/write operations, leading to code execution, via a crafted HTML page.
Known Exploited Vulnerability
This Google Chromium V8 Out-of-Bounds Memory Vulnerability is part of CISA's list of Known Exploited Vulnerabilities. Google Chromium V8 Engine contains an out-of-bounds memory vulnerability.
The following remediation steps are recommended / required by June 22, 2022: Apply updates per vendor instructions.
Vulnerability Analysis
CVE-2016-5198 is exploitable with network access, requires user interaction. This vulnerability is considered to have a low attack complexity. It has an exploitability score of 2.8 out of four. The potential impact of an exploit of this vulnerability is considered to be very high.
Out-of-bounds Read
The software reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Typically, this can allow attackers to read sensitive information from other memory locations or cause a crash. A crash can occur when the code reads a variable amount of data and assumes that a sentinel exists to stop the read operation, such as a NUL in a string. The expected sentinel might not be located in the out-of-bounds memory, causing excessive data to be read, leading to a segmentation fault or a buffer overflow. The software may modify an index or perform pointer arithmetic that references a memory location that is outside of the boundaries of the buffer. A subsequent read operation then produces undefined or unexpected results.
What is a Memory Corruption Vulnerability?
The software writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Typically, this can result in corruption of data, a crash, or code execution. The software may modify an index or perform pointer arithmetic that references a memory location that is outside of the boundaries of the buffer. A subsequent write operation then produces undefined or unexpected results.
CVE-2016-5198 has been classified to as a Memory Corruption vulnerability or weakness.
