vm2 3.11.0 - arbitrary prototype access via BaseHandler.getPrototypeOf (Node.js)
CVE-2026-44006 Published on May 13, 2026
vm2: Sandbox Escape
vm2 is an open source vm/sandbox for Node.js. Prior to 3.11.0, It is possible to reach BaseHandler.getPrototypeOf, which can be used to get arbitrary prototypes. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.11.0.
Vulnerability Analysis
CVE-2026-44006 is exploitable with network access, and does not require authorization privileges or user interaction. This vulnerability is considered to have a low attack complexity. An automatable proof of concept (POC) exploit exists. The potential impact of an exploit of this vulnerability is considered to be critical as this vulnerability has a high impact to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of this component.
Weakness Types
What is a Code Injection Vulnerability?
The software constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment.
CVE-2026-44006 has been classified to as a Code Injection vulnerability or weakness.
Improper Control of Dynamically-Identified Variables
The software does not properly restrict reading from or writing to dynamically-identified variables. Many languages offer powerful features that allow the programmer to access arbitrary variables that are specified by an input string. While these features can offer significant flexibility and reduce development time, they can be extremely dangerous if attackers can modify unintended variables that have security implications.
