RCE in simple-git v3.153.32.2 Node.js
CVE-2026-28292 Published on March 10, 2026
simple-git has blockUnsafeOperationsPlugin bypass via case-insensitive protocol.allow config key that enables RCE
`simple-git`, an interface for running git commands in any node.js application, has an issue in versions 3.15.0 through 3.32.2 that allows an attacker to bypass two prior CVE fixes (CVE-2022-25860 and CVE-2022-25912) and achieve full remote code execution on the host machine. Version 3.23.0 contains an updated fix for the vulnerability.
Vulnerability Analysis
CVE-2026-28292 is exploitable with network access, and requires small amount of user privileges. This vulnerability is considered to have a low attack complexity. An automatable proof of concept (POC) exploit exists. The potential impact of an exploit of this vulnerability is considered to be very high.
Weakness Types
What is a Shell injection Vulnerability?
The software constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component.
CVE-2026-28292 has been classified to as a Shell injection vulnerability or weakness.
Improper Handling of Case Sensitivity
The software does not properly account for differences in case sensitivity when accessing or determining the properties of a resource, leading to inconsistent results.
Improper Neutralization of Equivalent Special Elements
The software properly neutralizes certain special elements, but it improperly neutralizes equivalent special elements. The software may have a fixed list of special characters it believes is complete. However, there may be alternate encodings, or representations that also have the same meaning. For example, the software may filter out a leading slash (/) to prevent absolute path names, but does not account for a tilde (~) followed by a user name, which on some *nix systems could be expanded to an absolute pathname. Alternately, the software might filter a dangerous "-e" command-line switch when calling an external program, but it might not account for "--exec" or other switches that have the same semantics.
