GRUB2 Heap OOB Write via Malicious .mo File, Circumvent Secure Boot
CVE-2024-45777 Published on February 19, 2025

Grub2: grub-core/gettext: integer overflow leads to heap oob write.
A flaw was found in grub2. The calculation of the translation buffer when reading a language .mo file in grub_gettext_getstr_from_position() may overflow, leading to a Out-of-bound write. This issue can be leveraged by an attacker to overwrite grub2's sensitive heap data, eventually leading to the circumvention of secure boot protections.

What is a Memory Corruption Vulnerability?

The software writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Typically, this can result in corruption of data, a crash, or code execution. The software may modify an index or perform pointer arithmetic that references a memory location that is outside of the boundaries of the buffer. A subsequent write operation then produces undefined or unexpected results.

CVE-2024-45777 has been classified to as a Memory Corruption vulnerability or weakness.
